I give this place somewhere between 2 and 3 stars. I had the brisket. I have to say that slicing it about as thin as thick-sliced bacon is a turn off for me. It makes me wonder why anyone would do that. Well, my guess is it's because the meat is tough and dry. It had the flavor, but it was a little tougher for my taste. Otherwise, not a bad place to get some BBQ. Not my first choice, however.

The bar-b-que is excellent; I had the pork and the beef. The pig wing was everything I had hoped for and more. Next time I will also try the turkey rib. The hush puppies could not have been better, and the slaw and brunswick stew were super tasty too. The bar-b-que sauce was perfect. To top it off, I strongly encourage folks to try the fried pies; WOW was that good!

Once upon at time, way back in the history of our fine city. There was a popular drive in that served a damn fine chili dog. It was known as the Yellow Jacket and was a stones throw from the campus of Ga Tech. Business grew until expansion was inevitable. As they out grew the original location and set their sites on a bigger spot closer to the freeway. The owner also saw the need for a similar restaurant in Atlanta's sister city of Athens. He figured a name change was in order, as to not offend the delicate sensibilities of those dawg loving Athens dwellers. Thus the Varsity was born. Throngs of tourist would from then on shovel many a greasy stew ladened tube sausage down their gullets none the wiser. Fortunately for us , my wizened old room mate has the knowledge so many seek. Where oh where can one go, when seeking a taste of this long gone history? I know. Fred's Bar-B-Que house. They hold the recipe for the original concoction that drew so many to have their taste buds tickled by such low brow American fare. Fred's isn't much to look at when compared to the neon vestige that shines above the highway downtown. It looks from the outside ,like a very non-desrcript que shack. And it is. There are twin windows inside ,adorned with signs covered in little plastic letters describing the choices they offer. There are Barbecue sandwiches, baskets and plates. We all know how this works. The sides also. Beans, cole slaw, Stew, chips, and onion rings. (They have fried corn but sadly I didn't discover this until reading the to-go menu later. ) As much as I love some que, I came for the dog. I had two chili dogs, all the way, no onions. The first noticeable difference is the toasted bun. The second and most important is the chili. It is perfect dog chili. Mild but tasty. Not too greasy. The bun holds up until the last bite. After two I was sorely tempted to have another. Instead I had a pork sammy, with stew and onion rings. Normally I detest onion rings, or onion of any sort. These are the best o-rings that I have ever had! Crispy thick beer battered and deep fried to perfection. Awesome. The que was ok, tender, juicy meat. Not very spicy, but cooked right. There is only one sauce option. It's brown and vinegary. Not much sign of tomato or mustard. It was mild but a yummy complement to the meat. Nothing to write home about but I have certainly had worse. The stew was one of those Bruswick offerings that too closely resembles a pile of puke. It tasted ok, but the appearance is hard to get past. Entirely too similar to Dinty Moore. They also have fried pie, which I couldn't have possibly gotten down. there will be a next time! The resto is a homey joint full of grays, that all seem to be regulars. I say that because the sweet lil ol lady clearing tables hugged nearly everyone as the came in or left. The wait staff was super nice and all of them offered to pitch in to help find a small t-shirt for me. How could I leave without a shirt that declares "YOU CAN SMELL OUR BUTTS FOR MILES'? I could not. I came I saw, I ate the hell out some southern folklore, and it was GOOD.

This place was pretty close to the hotel I was staying at and when I was looking for the hotel i spotted it so i looked it up on yelp and thought id give it a try. I got in right before closing so they were trying hurry me up to get me out which i didnt mind since i was going to eat in the hotel room anyway. Lots of choices on the menu i thought i would like to try the cracked out redneck lady behind the counter says "come on boy dont you know what you want" ok ok the pressure was getting to me. I got a pulled pork sandwich and i saw the review on the chili dog so i had to try one too. hmmm the chili dog has "mustard, chili, onions, & ket". Ket.... Whats ket. I ask the cashier "whats ket" *long silent pause* "Are you kidding me kid "ket" ketchup. what else would it be." So at this point im thinking was that a stupid question to ask i mean they are the ones putting mustard ketchup and chili in a hot dog which seems weird to me. One of the employees then proceeds to walk around to see if it actually said that on the board. "Yup it say "ket" Whelp we never had anyone ask that one before." So im waiting for my food feeling like a retard when all of a sudden the red neck lady from behind the counter see my T-shrit (Lamb of God) "O man that bad rocks *devil horns* they changed my life. They are so kick ass man your shirt is sweet." Dont get me wrong i like lamb of god be seriously this women was seriously cracked out or something i was happy she was just ringing me up and not actually making my food. So me still trying to be nice, i give a smile and tell her "yea there a really good band" . Woo my food is done got to go! I take the food back to the hotel and start to eat. The chili dog was pretty damn good like Lee said but i have had better. Im happy i got the "ket" and onions on it everything meshed well. Now on the other had the fries werent very good which im sure was due to me being the last customer and getting the last bit of fries. The pulled pork sandwich was decent i wish is had more BBQ sauce. Lucille's had a WAY better PPS I should be going out to Atlanta again HOPEFULLY next I can get some real BBQ out there!

Friendly staff and expansive menu. Yellow jacket with cheese all the way minus ketchup was awesome. My kids went back for more. Bbq chicken and beef were fantastic! Definitely make the short trip North of I-20 for this food. :-)

I have been going to Fred's for many years. The food is delicious and the tea is wonderful. The Brunswick stew is some of the best I have ever had. I highly recommend Fred's to everyone I meet.

Delicious. Over the years I've been going here the prices have rose up some. Now, that being said, I still love this place. I enjoy the hotdogs and the BBQ sandwiches. I'll be honest and say I haven't ventured far from that. I love them and always get it. The Brunswick stew is very good! My brother has had the fried corn. It is also good. Sometimes my parents get the grilled cheese. We haven't had anything bad here yet. It is one of my favorite BBQ places around.

Ughh...thought trying a new bbq place was a good idea....nope. No one greeted us as we walked in and as first time customers we weren't sure if we were to order at counter or wait to be seated or what. We figured it out when an employee finally said "is anyone ready to order? ". Our food came fast. The pork sandwiches were good but not great. There was only one type of bbq sauce and some hot sauce. The slaw was very under seasoned, and the few fries we got were droopy and sad. One of my pet peeves is for an employee to clean around where I am eating. During our entire meal the small dining room was swept, large trash containers removed etc. It wasn't close to closing time either. We also got the feeling that family friendly meant if you are family, we'll be friendly.

Friday before dinner. Place was almost empty. Wow a Coke Freestyle machine! Pretty high tech for out here. Basic BBQ menu. Never would have guessed that Texas was a bigger sandwich. The Q is good but the staff is bossy.....order at the counter then wait till they call your number. Well ok if my wife can't have both tots and hush puppies, just tell her that costs extra but be nice about it! The Brunswick stew was nice but the foam bowl thing is a little 1980 ish don't you think? So why can't I have my cup right after I order and pay? Why can't I get my Freestyle on until after my food is ready? Dude! Yeah I know the menu is on the board but maybe I haven't been here before and if your counter staff wasn't so bitchy they could have helped me out with some frigging suggestions. Good thing your Q was good. That's the only reason I'd sit on your tacky ass picnic benches and eat here. Oh yeah I like Tater tots too. Maybe I'll try one of your weird hot dogs next time.

I have been going to Freds for a number of years. it is one of the few places where you can get the same quality product every single time. From their yellow jacket hotdogs, to the great BBQ, Fred's is an institution. If you want to know what quality BBQ taste like, go to Freds.

The only reason we stopped was because Wallace BBQ was closed. We both had the pork sandwich basket. (Sandwich, fries and slaw) and my husband added an order of Brunswick stew to his. The sandwich was so-so, the sauce was pretty good but it's nothing to write home about. The slaw was not great and the fries were about the same. My husband hated the Brunswick stew, I thought it was ok, but it's nothing great either. They had hotdogs that they are apparently known for so if you go you might want to stick with that.

I love Fred's BBQ House. It's got such a homey, comfortable feel, and the folks who run it are always friendly and welcoming. It's also close to the house and offers takeout, so it's always a convenient way to get our BBQ fix. Fred's ascribes to the vinegar school of sauce-making, which I happen to like. There aren't any other sauce options, though, if your taste doesn't run that direction. They are the home of the Yellow Jacket Dog, which my niece loves. They also have pulled pork, beef, and mixed plates of bbq, and you can get it separate or as a sandwich. Though I haven't had them myself yet, I am told the onion rings are divine. The reason that I keep going back, though, is that Brunswick stew. It is meaty, piping hot, and full of flavor. I definitely recommend upgrading the size to the 8 oz. cup if you're a fan of stew, too. I could eat it every single day of my life. The restaurant is very low-key, and most of its patrons seem to be of the "regular" variety; for me, that's a draw, so take it for what it's worth. All in all, Fred's is a family-friendly, enjoyable place to grab a bite to eat when you're in the mood for BBQ.

THIS REVIEW IS NOT ABOUT THE TASTE OF THE FOOD HERE. I HAVE NEVER BEEN AND I MAY DECIDE NEVER TO GO BECAUSE..... I just called this place to ask if the hotdogs are beef or pork because I do not knowingly eat pork anymore. I was told they are all Meat. Now I understand that most hotdogs unless labeled otherwise are full of damn meat! So twice I had to ask "What kind of meat?". Finally the guy says why pork and beef of course. Then when I said are these beef hotdogs, why not just say no ma'am they are beef and pork. I'm thinking this is a place that I don't need to visit because I will fight a man. OK! :)

Stopped by today for the first time in a long time. I find Fred's to be your average BBQ House with far-above average hospitality and customer care. I had the two meat plate - pork & beef - and was served a large enough portion that I had to grab a box and bring some on home. The smokiness was just right and the meat was tender. My preference would be toward the pork. My Brunswick Stew was very nice with good flavor and a mix of meat. The slaw was chilled and smooth. I snitched a fry from my wife, and though still quite warm, they'd been out just a minute or two too long. But when I took them back, they revisited the fryer to finish them off, and were handed back to me perfectly piping hot. Nicely done. All the staff is fully focused on your eating pleasure, which makes Fred's a very enjoyable experience.

When a person thinks of southern BBQ this is the place they picture in their heads. The building, the atmosphere, and the food are exactly what a person wants when craving southern BBQ. The simplicity of the menu makes this a perfect lunch stop.

Short review: this was basic BBQ and the service is just fine and attentive. As we were just visiting the Atlanta area, I suppose we were expecting a bit more from Southern BBQ. Pulled pork on a hamburger bun was a tad underwhelming. But it is a good place for a quick on-the-go dinner.

Pork BBQ Sandwich, Cole Slaw, Brunswick Stew and a water. First the sandwich. I "upgraded" to the 5". Wow that was a dissapointment in size/upgrade cost metrics. Not much meat inclosed in a soggish white bread sandwich bun. The meat was smokey, the sauce tasteful, but nothing stood out that said "EAT ME!". Cole Slaw. Served in a shot glass sized styrafoam cup. Very crunchy little pieces, Not sweet, not spicey, not especially memorable. Brunswick Stew. I again "upgraded" from the plate of fries to a shot glass sized styrafoam cup for 40 cents. Again dissapointed on the size/upgrade cost metrics. The stew was the highlight of the meal. It has nice umami, texture and balanced seasonings. Water. Why do I mention water? Well...Apparently they chage 55 cents for tap water at Fred's. Either that or it was the lemon that cost 55 cents. Either way...hello!...If wanted to pay for a drink I would have ordered tea or carbonated corn syrup. Meh. I've experienced better. Check out the Contreju Jamaican place down the street.

I went to this place twice! First time, I went with my nieces and nephew because they saw a review about it somewhere. The food was good, but the people and the place are what made this place special. I ordered. A yellow jacket with the works as recommended. My relatives had stew and a variety of other things. It was good! But somehow it didn't. Give me a FoodGasmic. That is until I tried their Pig Wings! Dawgumbit, it was great!! So I left Atlanta wanting more so now am back in town, I got a heaping of some Pig Wings and some Texas cheeseburger. The Pig Wings sure was delish! I can't wait to be back again on my next trip. In short, Fred's BBQ House was ummmm, good!
